Monday, April 19, 2010 - Submitted by The TSC from the Town Of Taos and the Taos News
The same contractor who built the high school football and baseball fields won the bid Thursday (April 15, 2010) to construct the town's new soccer field. Lone Mountain Contractors, of Bosque Farms, will do the job for $2.55 million, including an artificial turf field, landscaping and irrigation, lighting, bleachers and rest rooms at the new Alexander Gusdorf Eco-Park on Salazar Road. The contractor is hoping to break ground later this month and anticipates construction will take about 20 weeks. For more of this story, click on or type the URL below:
The Town of Taos is moving forward with acquiring funding to increase/improve local sports facility offerings to benefit area youth, as well as attract tourists seeking recreation/sports-oriented vacations or venues for high-altitude training/tournaments. Toward that end, the Town is completing a 40-year lease, joint venture agreement/memorandum of understanding, with the Taos Municipal School District to develop an Eco Park. This Park, now proposed on approx. 20 District-owned acres on Salazar, is to include state-of-the-art, artificial turf, regulation FIFA size soccer fields for tournament play.
The Town is responsible for funding/developing the Park and is beginning actual development with a phase one, $2 million loan, preliminarily approved by the New Mexico Finance Authority. These funds will complete at least one field, core infrastructure, and other basic facilities. Conceptual designs are currently being completed through previously appropriated State of NM funds, and completion of the ultimate phase one development itself will go out for public RFP. This loan will NOT increase any Town of Taos taxes. It will NOT max out Town of Taos bonding capacity (GRT increment funding will be used for debt service). More info? The project was supported unanimously by the Town Council (Michael Silva, Rudy Abeyta, Amy Quintana, Gene Sanchez) and Mayor Darren Cordova.
